AbstractKhorat's role as the main economic centre for the Northeastern Region Led to its rapid growth with uncontrolled development particularly in the housing field. One problem aspect of its housing development is the gap between the ability of the rich and the poor to afford adequate housing. This gap is obvious from the number of people in Khorat living in squatter type housing settlements. The aim of this study is to explore the housing development system in Khorat town order to understand and assess it, recognizing that Khorat has been designated for assess it, recognising that Khorat has been designated for accelerated development under the Regional Cities Program. More specifically, the study focusses on the prices and standards of the various types of housing being developed in khorat and estimates the affordability of each type of housing for the urban households at various income levels. The study found that although Khorat has a well established land and housing development, industry with capacity to respond to an increased market demand, it caters only for the middle to high income groups. The poor households live in substandard areas and are being pushed out of town because they are unable to afford the land and housing being developed by private developers, and even by the government housing authority. Some recommendations are made for extending the affordability of new housing for low-income households.
