Abstract | The present work on inventory control of multiple items under demand substitution deals with the case, where for a given set of items that are demanded, the decision involved is to determine a subset of items to be stocked to satisfy the total demand. This problem results into a well-known assortment problem where all the parameters of the problem are assumed to be known with certainty. Solution procedures based on dynamic programming formulations are presented f or both the static and dynamic natures of demand under the assumption that an item is substituted by an item of the next higher dimension of demand characteristics. The static demand case, as a general assortment problem when an item can be substituted by any other feasible item, is formulated as a simple plant location problem. For this formulation a heuristic approach by Townsend, and an exact approach by Erlenkotter are adopted and compared. Each model is accompanied with a solution procedure and a numerical example. |
