AbstractRecently the direct sowing of rice technique was introduced at various test sites of Thailand. Here sprouted seeds were coated with Calcium peroxide based chemical, commercially known as Calper Dust, before sowing in the field. The effectiveness of this new technique was measured by making an economic comparison between the conventional methods and direct sowing technique of rice cultivation. Manually operated seed coating and direct sowing machines were used in performance tests. After field trials some modifications in the seed metering and soil covering devices were made to suit local conditions. Two soil covering devices, inclined plate type and wooden roller type, out of four, were found suitable to attain satisfactory soil covering performance. Based upon pot test analysis, both within the laboratory and field, it was found that for good germination, 50% Calper Dust application on the seed and seed placement depth range of 7-18 mm works satisfactorily.
