AbstractThe objective of this investigation was to measure the deformation rate effects on soil parameters cohesive and frictional modulus of sinkage (Kc and K), exponent of sinkage (n), cohesion (c), angle of internal friction (ยข),and cone index (C). These soil parameters are extensively used for the prediction of tractive performance of off-road vehicles. A hydraulic Bevameter was designed which simulated deformation-rate and soil loading conditions for typical off-road vehicles. The study was conducted at deformation rate varying from 5 cm/s to 25 cm/s in a dry sandy loam and puddled heavy clay soil, The heavy clay soil showed a very. soft. layer at the top 13.5 cm, but a hard layer below that, with a clear identification. The computed pressure (using the measured K , K and n) for the 0.06 m footing at various depth in sandy loam soil was Independent of deformation rate, but was sensitive to deformation rate in the heavy clay soil. No change in cone index values were detected with deformation-rate in the sandy loam soil, but a noticeable one in the heavy clay soil. It was also noticed that the cohesion values in heavy clay soil were sensitive to deformation-rate. The shear torque for sandy loam soil showed an exponential relationship rather than a linear one with the normal pressure. Finally, an equation for the pressure-sinkage relationship was developed, which incorporates the effects of the rate of deformation.
