AbstractTwenty concrete tanks loaded with five levels of organic loading of cesspool sludge in terms of kg COD/hd/ day were studied using various parameters, namely ; chlorophyll a , absorbance , total suspended solids, volatile suspended solids, turbidity and secchi disk visibility. Relationships with phytoplankton biomass which was estimated from chlorophyll a values were determined and discussed to assess these effectiveness of these methods. Phytoplankton density in the ponds was primarily dependent upon organic matter loading. The apparent water quality of the ponds were affected by the degree of the organic loading which eventually affected the fish stocked . Dense blooms resulted in low transparencies, oxygen supersaturation at daytime and depletion at nightime , followed by fish deaths , especially at high loading rates. Blue green algae , particularly Microcystis were the most abundant species identified , both in the water and in the fish stomach. This confirms the herbivorous characteristic of the tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. The highest extrapolated fish yield obtained was 4,484 kg/ha/year at 75 kg COD/ha/day loading rate . The specific growth rate (SGR) was affected primarily by environmental factors which resulted to zero SGR because all the fish died in t h e two highest loading treatments , 225 kg COD/ha/day and 300 kg COD/ha/day.
