AbstractManaging some process needs instantaneous and accurate information. This study develops a microcomputer based telecontrol network that supports the information interchange among components of an electric power distribution system. The electric power distribution system has one main station and nine substations. The protocol of the network is designed based on the CCITT x.25 recommendation and the layering concepts of the ISO standard for open system interconnection ISO/TC97/SC16. Microcomputers are chosen as the heart of the network system to reduce the cost. Modular hardware and software are designed to make the development and maintenance of the system easier. Technological change in any layer can be easily adopted by this modular design. A prototype of the communication subsystem which is the important and difficult part of the network system is implemented and tested to verify the validity of the design. Two other experiments are carried out to support the network design namely the automatic remote control program and graphic utility program. The automatic remote control program is a program to control the voltage and reactive power of an electric substation from the master station. This experiment shows that the telecontrol message can be automatically generated by the program in the master station. The graphic utility program is developed to know the time required to display one power image of the electric substation. The results from the above experiments show that the design of the network using a microcomputer is valid.
