AbstractA serial project planning technique is used for repetitive type of housing construction project, where many factors have to be considered during the planning. General criteria of managing the project are studied. The duration of an activity in a unit is kept equal to that in another unit. the work continuity means that the same activity in a unit immediately follows that in the preceding unit, and in a certain unit an activity must obey the sequence of dependencies among activities. The selection of the starting point and duration of the next activity are made in such a way that the work continuity is obtained. The duration of the next activity is selected from 3 possible choices; i.e., shorter than, longer than, and equal to the preceding activity. A linear programming computer package (MPSX-MIP/370) is used to obtain the most appropriate resource allocation and minimum construction cost for a specified project completion time. A line-of-balance technique is used to control and analyze the progress of construction. A seven-storied apartments project is used to illustrate the application of the proposed model. The result of this study indicates that the serial project planning technique combined with the bar chart facilitates good checking and control of the progress of construction, and the line-of-balance is a practical tool for the management control of the project.
