AbstractA higher order displacement plate finite element has been developed using the degeneration technique. The formulation of the 6-noded, 21 d.o.f triangular element includes shear energy and has a wide range of applications. Square, circular and skew plate examples were tested with selected meshes and several aspect ratios for their static behavior under uniformly distributed and concentrated loads. The free vibration responses of the element are also examined for square and rectangular plates with aspect ratios of 10 and 100. Comparison of these results with the analytical and other finite element solitons have proved that the present element is most suited for moderately thick and very thick plate problems. However, accurate thin plate solutions could only be obtained with a finer mesh. The incorporation of shear deformation and rotatory inertia into this formulation have yielded excellent results, especially for free vibration analysis of thick plates at higher modes.
