Abstract | This study investigates t he applicability of an 8-bit microcomputer (APPLE II) to solve large finite element problems. Certain aspects of programming technique considering the limited core memory and the relatively 1ow speed of microcomputer are discussed. Then , guidelines for the development of a non 'back-box' modular program are suggested. A macro programming language, MICROFEAP , written in Applesoft BASIC, is then presented . For efficiency , this program fully utilizes the limited core memory and minimizes the number of data transfers. Numerical examples solved by this program are used to illustrate its effectiveness. In one particular case , the program was used for the solution of a plane frame problem with as many as 525 degrees-of-freedom taking 221 minutes on an APPLE II microcomputer. |
