AbstractA 1/10 scale model is built and tested to study the benaviour and the construct method tor a cable-suspended roof system. The new root system consists of a rectangular net of cables prestressed in only one direction. Temporary loading is applied before the precast root panels are Jointed. The subsequent removal of the temporary loads has a prestressing effect on the completed roof. This increases considerably the efficiency of the completed roof under service load condition. Experimental results confirm the efficiency of the new systems. A series of relevant pi-numbers are derived in this study. These will permit the prediction of the corresponding behaviour of the prototype, and are useful in the design of a real cable-suspended roof structure. FEAR81 was employed for analyzing the cable-suspended roof structure. Comparisons between the experimental and the analytical results indicate that the nonlinear characteristics of the roof system can be adequately predicted using the available cable and shell element subroutines.
