AbstractThe present study investigates strategies for developing a micro-computer program for structural analysis by matrix and finite element methods. Various aspects of a micro-computer (Apple II) a nd its software facilities are considered with emphasis on the efficiency of the in-core memory· allocation and the da. ta. management system, the suitability of program modularization techniques, the utilization of interactive data inputs and graphical display of results. A symbolic manipulation program is then dev eloped based on the above study. The program to be known as the Analysis Interpretive Treatise tor micro-computer (MICRO-AIT) , is written in Applesoft BASIC language. It consists of a main program, acting as a central administrator, and a set of subprograms (processors) each performi.ng a specific well-defined function. The program is efficiently modularized in such a way that individual processors are totally independent. As a result, the limited in- core memory of the micro-computer is fully utilized at all the time . The capabilities of the MICRO-AIT program include the following: (a) General data file management. commands, (b) Matrix operation commands, and (c) Finite element analysis commands. Several numerical examples of structural analysis problems are presented to demonstrate the versatility of the program. In one example, a three-dimensional five story building is analyzed by the substructure technique.
