AbstractTo observe a transient rate of the growth of ripples, experiments are carried out in a wave flume (40 m x 1 m x 1 m) . Two sizes of sand with median particle diameters 0.24 mm and 0 . 41 mm are used. All of the experiments are carried out on a flat bed and sloping beds. For fine sand , a bed slope of 1 on 20 is used while for coarse sand and bed slope of 1 on 10 and 1 on 20 are used. The maximum particle velocity and excursion are calculated from small amplitude wave equations. The experimental range of the water wave characteristics for the sand is greatly reduced by the limitation of the wave flume . To find the dominant factors affecting the behaviour of ripple formation, a dimensional analysis is first made and these are the relative smoothness of the bed sediment and the densimetric sediment Froude number. Analysis of ripple formation from an initially sloping bed and flat bed based on the obtained experimental results are made . Empirical equations are obtained for the transient model of the ripple he ight and length. The transient rate of growth and time needed to attain fully developed ripples which are then expressed as a functional relationship in terms of the relative smoothness of the bed sediment or the densimetric sediment Froude number or combination of both. To obtain the coefficient of the linear and non linear terms from those functional relationship, the method of least square is used .
