AbstractData from five stations along the Mekong, both annual flood and low flows are statistically analyzed . The expected flow magnitudes at different return periods are computed using five different probability distributions, namely: normal , three-parameter lognormal, Gumbel , Pearson type III and log Pearson type III distributions. The return flow magnitudes computed by these distribution functions were plotted using the results of the Gumbel distribution as the reference frame. The streamflow data are then transformed by means of SMEMAX and power transformations and the transformed variates analyzed as normal variables. The suitability of transformation is examined using the w-test and the Pearson tests for normality. The return magnitudes of the best transformed variates are then compared with those of the aforementioned probability distributions. In addition, transformation characteristics, especially of power transformation were examined . These include the variation of the transformed sample statistics with respect to the power of transformation, lambda . The applicability of the different probability distributions to the data series from different stations was examined by using Kolmogorov-Smirnov goodness-of-fit test. The suitability was then ranked on a station to station basis.
