AbstractIn most planning and design of a newly proposed marine terminal, the investigation .of its effects on existing tidal f l ow regime is usually carried out at the end of the preliminary planning stage by means of a physical model. In other words, the effects of the proposal on existing tidal flow have not been taken into consideration during the preliminary planning stage. At best, only a very rough estimate of the effects is done by means of a non-rational approach . As a result, physical modeling has to be repeated several times before a good layout is obtained . This is not only costly but also time consuming . Hence there is a need to develop a planning pool . . This thesis work is .solely tailored to this need . A two-dimensional depth averaged numerical model is developed using a finite difference method combination of the Alternating Direction Implicit (ADI) method and the Explicit method . The model is applied to the Keppel Channel, Singapore to test its reliability. The findings obtained from this numerical analysis agree quite we l l with those obtained from physical modeling conducted in Poona Research Station, India.
