Abstract | Knowledge of wave attenuation and mass transport velocity on ripple beds is required for a quantitative description of the sediment transport due to waves. To have an insight into this phenomenon , an experiment is performed in a wave flume of uniform cross section , 1m x 1m, and a length of 40m. A Self-propelling carriage is used to obtain the envelope of wave height profiles over two rigid ripple beds with sloping beach in the flume. Friction factors are determined from the data of wave height attenuation derived from the principle of energy balance. The experimental results show that (i) the friction factor remains almost constant when the relative smoothness of bed is small, k* (ii) when the relative smoothness of bed is larger, the friction factors decrease because the generated turbulence is smaller . Mass transport velocities are measured on the two rigid ripple beds and comparisons are also made with theoretical values. |
