AbstractLack of sufficient labour and high wages, especially in labour-peak season, are believed to be the main factors which have been stimulating the agricultural mechanization in Korea. However, there is not sufficient custom work to cover the machinery cost and to be economically feasible. The farm holding size is 1.0 ha on the average. Therefore a village is considered to be a desirable agricultural machinery utilizing block. In this study, an attempt has been made to determine the optimal cropping plan and the optimal level of mechanization on the village level. Linear programming technique is applied for this purpose and sensitivity analysis has been undertaken under the conditions that the farm labour decreases by 3.5 % annually and wages change from $0.5/ hour to $1.0/hour. When wages is $0.5/hour, land preparation by power tiller is economic only for barley cultivated on paddy field, and cropping intensity gradually decreases as the available labour force decreases. Once wages increase to $1.0/hour all the paddy fields should be planted only once a year with H.Y. V. type rice, a land pre-paration, transplanting, and harvesting for all paddy fields should be done by power tiller, rice- transplanter, and reaper- binder, respectively
