AbstractThis study is an attempt to a analyze the factors which are associated with academic performance at the secondary school level , the strength of association and the extent to which these factors account for the variation in achievement. Various techniques such as simple linear regression , ยท multiple linear regression and stepwise linear regression are applied, and comparison is made to find out the better method. Prediction is also carried out to tor cast pupils ' academic performance in the government exami11ation when they complete their secondary education. The study finds that previous performance , especially the performance in the final year of secondary school, is the most important factor affecting the performance in the government examination, that is, pupils with good results in school get better results in the government examination. The variables that relate to achievement but account tor a small portion of achievement variation are father ' s occupation, grade repetition and age. Other variables such as race, sex , language spoken at home and family size are also associated with the achievement in the government examination.
