AbstractCalculations have been made on the operation of a solar air heater and rock bed heat store for drying with reference to tobacco curing. Mathematical models are formulated for air temperatures obtained in a horizontal flat- plate solar collector, for the variation of solar radiation on the collector, and for the temperature distributions of air in the rock bed. The results show that for a convertional tobacco curing barn, a rock bed length considerably gr eater than 10 meters would be needed to smooth out diurnal fluctuation in the air temperature from the solar heater.
