AbstractThis research study deals with women in development. The report has two parts. Part one is the literature review on women in development process, which focus on the women's position and status in their societies. This part of study also stress the negative effects of development on women, and how actions have been carried out to improve the situations of women in developing countries. The second part of the report is the study of women at the village level by using primary data collection. The study area is in Gonnoruwa village, Hambantota district in the southern province of Sri Lanka. The study focuses on the activities of women, their roles and position in the community. The description of the village livelihood is also presented. The findings from this study reveal that rural women in developing countries are more or less facing the same situation. They have dual roles, i.e., as domestic and field workers. Even though they work long hours in the house and in the fields, their economic contributions and working potentials are not fully recognized both by their own community and by planners or policy makers. Despite the fact that development process more or less have negative effects on women, they are often left out of the development programmes. As one of the steps in trying to remedy this situation. this study tries to incorporate the empirical findings from the village study with the concept of involving women into the development process in order to upgrade and improve their economic potentials and status. This report proposes a project on Dairy Farm Development as an income generating programme for young girls from poor farm families in Gonnoruwa.
