AbstractWomen are consider employed persons both inside and outside the household. They normally work longer than men, but their existence are never made attention by planners. So far, women's condition had been neglected. New technology and training have been given to men as the heads of households, for increasing household income is considered men's domain and responsibility. This study is a village level study concerned with the condition of women living in a fishing community. The study is divided into two parts. The first part is a review of the roles and status of women in development. The next part provides a general background for a project proposal to generate income for fisherman's wives. The area of the study selected is Rekawa Village, Hambantota district, Sri Lanka. The district is one of the less developed areas in Sri Lanka. The condition of fishermen's lives in Rekawa village is very low, therefore, the wives of the fishermen have to find other activities to augment household income. Collecting corals used to be the major preoccupation of women in the fishing village until it was prohibited by the government because it results to sea shore erosion. Fish preservation project is proposed to substitute the coral collecting activity, It might not be as profitable as collecting corals, but it presents an alternative to select among activities.
