AbstractThis study is part of a series of reports on a Rural Development Workshop conducted in Hambantota District, Sri Lanks, in April/May 1982. The study is organized into two parts: The Role of Infrastructure in Rural Development; and a Proposal for Upgrading Infrastructure in the Weliwewa Project Area, Hambantota District. Based on a general review of the problem presented in Part I, the main conclusions ·of Part II are: (a) to improve and maintain roads in the Project Area, the government should provide the resources and employ manual labour for supplementary employment of the villagers, (b) a primary school should be built with the villagers' participation and, (c) villagers should be taught first aid remedies while the government assist in providing free medical kits and supplies.
