AbstractLocal small tractor industry in Thailand has been growing rapidly for a long time but due to heavy competition in the market, which is a price sensitive market, and lack of technology knowledgement, it recently began to suffer and several firms had to leave the industry. To be able to survive in the market, a firm has to reduce the price of its product as much as possible or, otherwise, be capable of introducing a new model to the market. However, most of the firms in the industry are developed from small repairing shops and do not have enough technology knowledgement to improve the production process and reduce the production costs or design a new model to the market. The study has picked up a relatively large firm in the industry as a case study and is aimed at reducing the production costs of the firm by forecasting the demand and making production plans and schedules. The demand forecasting is done by applying regression analysis to the proposed model with an assistance of the SPSS package. Production planning and scheduling system proposed is a time constraint and production smoothing one. A FORTRAN IV scheduling program is written to help in routine computations and making the production plans and schedules.
