AbstractAlthough Transportation Problems are one o f the easiest problem in Operations Research, the determination of the number of trips that each ship has to make between each supply and demand ports fulfilling demands within a planning horizon, becomes a difficult task due to the limitation on the usage of vessels. Further, on many occasions the assignment has to be done according to two or more criteria. An attempt has been made in this paper, to model the above problem as a bi-criterion linear programming model and to apply to a real problem o f a s hipping company in Australia which transports coal between five supply and five demand ports. Due to the disadvantages of the integer bi-criterion models because o f computational inefficiency, the model built here is a continuous one. In order to improve this computational efficiency an attempt is made to formulate this problem in a two-stage net work model. A heuristic method is suggested to get an integer solution tram the continuous solution of the LP model and by comparing the results , it is found that t he integer solutions are satisfactory. Since a considerable difference is observed in the results of the network model with the corresponding LP model, suggestions are made to improve the accuracy of the network model. Further t wo methods proposed by Vilas for solving multi-criteria linear (integer) programming models are investigated and a suggestion is made for the improvement of one of his methods.
