AbstractThe specific objectives of the thesis were to assess the feasibility of utilizing cesspool slurry as a nutrient medium to cultivate duckweeds (Lenmaceae), a potential source of protein, by comparing their growth rate and protein content under different nutrient levels and to optimize growth conditions. Preliminary experiments were conducted to observe the growth of Spirodela, Lemna, Wolffia, (Lemnaceae)and Azolla (Azollaceae). It was decided that Spirodela would be the best material for further experiments and a total of four experiments were conducted. It was observed that algal blooms inhibited Spirodela growth at low stocking densities of duckweed. Increasing stocking density had a marked effect on suppression of algal growth and enabled the duckweeds to grow rapidly. The maximum productivity of Spirodela polyrhiza grown on cesspool slurry was found to be 14.6 tons dry weight/ha/year, and the doubling time irrespective of the treatment was 2,7 days. The maximum crude protein content of Spirodela polyrhiza in the experiments was 37.2%; and an average crude protein of 27,1% was found in experiment 3, The optimum nutrient range was suggested to be 20 mg/l TKN to 60 mg/l TKN when grown in outdoor test tanks.
