AbstractIn order to safeguard against the fatigue failure of the tractor frame from unforeseen circumstances, the precisely relevant factors effecting its design and fabrication have not been duly considered by the manufacturers. Two approaches were made to study the static and dynamic characteristics of the whole housing of the tractor. The static test included finding the behaviour of maximum and minimum principal stresses and their directions on the interesting locations of the frame under random application of the load for three methods of loading, viz ; rear, l eft and right side rear axle . Thus, the maximum stress can be used in the appropriate selection of the factor of safety by the designer to reduce the time and wastage of material. The dynamic test included analyzing the actual stress wave recorded in the field under various field conditions. Its amplitude , time and frequency domain were studied using probability density function, autocorrelation and power spectra l density respectively. Frequency distribution was used to evaluate the gradient of the Weibull ' s distribution which was used for the prediction of fatigue strength. To increase the degree of fatigue one should select smaller value of a depending on the fatigue limit of the material and the scale parameter, for a particular gradient and then this value can thus be used for redesigning the process. These proposed procedures will be of much help to the designer for optimum designing of the frame in the near future.
