AbstractA water resource investigation was conducted in the Kwan Phayao Watershed area, Phayao Province, Northern Thailand, during the period, May to December, 1981. The sedimentation into the Lake was measured by the hydrographic survey method. The average monthly inflow into the lake was evaluated by means of a water balance equation, and the estimation of monthly runoff coefficients was made by using the ratio of monthly inflow and monthly rainfall volume over the catchment area. The catchment yield was obtained from the product of 80 percent probability of rainfall and the runoff coefficient. The reference crop evapotranspiration was calculated by the modified Penman method and the irrigation area was found. The operation rule curve was also developed to enable the proper regulation of the water out of the lake. The sedimentation rate in the lake was found to be about 7 mm/year. It was found that the water retention level can be raised from 391.0 m MSL to 391.75 m MSL without much damage from flooding and at this level the lake can store about 14 x 106 m3 more than the original capacity. This additional water can be used for the irrigation of about 6200 ha and 1800 ha for the wet and dry seasons respectively, and the resultant deeper water in the lake will help to create more activities including fish production and recreation and reduce weed growth. The proposed rehabilitation schemes are also presented.
