AbstractDependence of countries on imported oil and the unprecedented rise in oil prices has adversely affected the economy of the developed and developing countries. Production of ethyl alcohol from renewable biomass is expected to displace oil as a domestic fuel. The impact of this program would depend on the energy balance of growing feedstock, the consumption of fuel in the production of alcohol, and on the total supply situation of petroleum products. This study deals with the economic impacts of the alcogas program on the total supply of petroleum products with the use of a computer linear program. It is an attempt to present an overall view of the industry in order to project and stress the interrelationships of each product, such that each one has to be considered in relation to the other.
