AbstractThe present research work was carried out in pilot plant scale to investigate the possibilities of using column test results as the basis for the design of tube settlers for the treatment of coagulated raw water. Experimental data confirm that the column settling curve can be used directly for full-scale tube settling system design, if a safety factor of two is applied. The performance of the inclined tube settler was evaluated using coagulated synthetic raw water of different turbidities at different flow rates. It was observed that better performance is achieved at an optimum flow velocity of 4 m3/m2-h, By varying the depth of the plenum below the tube bundle and by measuring the sludge depth across the plenum, equations are developed for the optimum design of the plenum, which ensures that sludge scouring and turbulence will not occur in this plenum. Finally, based on these equations, a design table applicable to urban areas is presented that readily gives the required dimensions of the tube module and the plenum.
