AbstractStatistical approaches to water quality evaluation and parameter estimation were investigated. Water quality indices for the Chao Phraya River were developed using the techniques of cluster type analysis, factor analysis and multiple regression. Results of factor analysis were also used to assess the possible reduction in the number of variables measured, adequacy of sampling locations and the underlying causes of pollution. Index values were then statistically compared with the ranking procedure of taxonomic analysis. Development of a forecasting model for BOD using the Group Method of Data Handling was attempted. Using data for the Chao Phraya River, two sets of equations were tested. Low correlation coefficients obtained make the equations inadequate for evaluating the structure of BOD. Determination of levels of acceptability for the water quality indices and a thorough investigation of the GMDH and its modifications as applied to water quality forecasting are recommended.
