AbstractThe purpose of this study is to illustrate the use of Box-Jenkins techniques in modeling, forecasting as well as in simulation study which may be needed in environmental quality management. The identification, estimation, diagnostic check stages of the model development and model structure selection criteria are explained. This aims at providing a systematic way of analyzing, modeling, forecasting and then simulating water quality. Although the seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average models have proven to be capable of representing many types of seasonal data, their practical application have been quite restricted because of many difficulties involved. In order to overcome these difficulties, the present study provides a number of techniques which, in most situations can reduce seasonal data to nonseasonal data which are easier to model. These techniques include apart from seasonal differencing, standardization and harmonic analysis whose purpose is to remove the seasonality or periodicity in the time series under consideration. The techniques are illustrated by the use of actual water quality data at several stations in Pakistan and in Taiwan. It was found that the autoregressive models with low order are frequently encountered, and forecasting with seasonal data seem to perform well when Box-Jenkins techniques are combined with harmonic or standardization methods.
