AbstractThis thesis presents two different unconventional water treatment alternatives - direct filtration without sedimentation, contact flocculation-filtration without flocculation and sedimentation. The technical feasibility of those methods depends on both raw water characteristics and operation conditions. Laboratory-scale tests were conducted to see the performance of anthracite filter in removing artificial suspended particles by direct filtration and contact flocculation filtration. It was found both raw water suspended solids levels .and filtration rates are responsible for variations in the filter performance. The bed depth service time method developed from adsorption theories successfully predicted the filtration performance. A conceptual model was introduced to predict the direct filtration and contact flocculation-filtration processes. This model would necessitate limited experimental study for the particular water to be treated.
