AbstractAlthough a number of water treatment plants use dual media filter as final clarifying. Their designs are based on empirical innovations. An extensive pilot plant scale study performed by varying the filtration rate, filter grain size and anthracite-sand depth ratio (with and without polymer addition) indicated that the optimum depth ratio varies with the variation in filtration rate and filter media size. This study also presents a rational way of optimizing the anthracite-sand depth ratio with respect to different independent parameters of filtration. The IVES's model with some assumptions was used to evaluate the theoretical filter run lengths for dual media filters. The filter parameters calculated using the single media experimental results were used in the prediction of dual media filter run lengths for different conditions of filtration.
