AbstractThe plant layout, processing lines, volume and strength of wastewater from the Safcol (Thailand) Co., Ltd. were investigated. Wastewater consisted mainly of combined tuna and 3ardine wastes. The flow of waste stream was in the range of 15.4-23.8 m /h. The wastewater was high in Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), grease & oil, and suspended solids contents. In the treatability study, the wastewater was pretreated by batch and continuous flow oil trap .with optimum detention time of 3 hours. The removal efficiencies for oil & grease and COD were 72 percent and 30 percent, respectively, in the continuous flow oil trap. Effluent from the oil trap was then treated by batch and continuous activated sludge process. In the batch activated sludge process, the COD concentration of influent was varied in the range of 1000-5000 mg/l, initial MLSS was kept in the range of 3000-5000 mg/l, the efficiency of COD removal was about 87-95 percent with SVI less than 250. For the study of continuous activated sludge process, the influent COD content was around 3000-5000 mg/l and the MLSS was kept at 3000 mg/l throughout the study at the hydraulic retention time of 4, 6 and 8 hours. The efficiency of COD removal was in the range of 91-93 percent and the organic loadings were 4.97, 3.76 and 3.06 kg COD/kg MLSS- day with yield values of 0.579, 0.462 and 0.379, respectively. For design purpose, 6 hours of hydraulic retention time with an organic loading of 3.76 kg COD/ kg MLSS- day was selected for the activated sludge treatment plant.
