AbstractA multivariate approach was used to develop a trophic state index based on 9 parameters measured in Laguna Lake, Philippines. These include dissolved oxygen, transparency, turbidity, nitrate, zooplankton, phytoplankton, total dissolved solids, pH, and temperature. Principal factor analysis selected four trophic state variables (transparency, phytoplankton, nitrate and temperature) for inclusion in the index (TSI(PFA)). This index is interpreted according to Shannon's rating of trophic states of 0-10 passing from oligotrophy to eutrophy. Results of TSI (PFA) applied to Laguna Lake indicated a hypereutrophic state of the lake. Carlson-type of indexing was also attempted using nitrate (TSI(N03)). Further, Carlson's equation for TSI using secchi disc transparency (TSI(SD)) was directly used. However, seasonal results were contrary to seasonal trend results of TSI (PFA). This revealed that Laguna Lake has a different behavior from lakes considered by Carlson as regards the two parameters, hence, although TSI(N03) and TSI (SD) are simple and cheaply measured, they are nevertheless not applicable to Laguna Lake.
