AbstractThe purpose of this study is to provide a statistical approach to the estimation of the amount of certain sediment components in reservoirs and lakes using the simulation technique. Based on the fact that there exists a high correlation between the stream flow discharge Q and some component S of the sediments, a regression analysis was carried out to obtain the relationship between the Q and S. Then a sequence of values for S can be generated using that relationship and the data which are commonly available for Q for longer period. Having obtained such a generated sequence, the time series analysis based on the Box-Jenkins models can be carried out to select the most appropriate model to represent that sequence. For such purpose, the fundamentals of the Box-Jenkins technique are described in details. Finally the selected model was used to produce longer sequences of S which are fed as inputs into the simulation studies for estimating the mean and variance of the accumulated amounts of the sediment component involved. Several illustrations were made by using the available data on suspended sediments, Ca, Mg and Fe at various locations. These also indicate the use fulness and appropriateness of the proposed approach.
