AbstractBox-Jenkins methods were used to analyze point-to-point time series data for air, bus and rail passenger traffic on the Taipei-Kaohsiung route. Attempts were made to identify explanatory variables which describe changes in the various passenger flows through time, and the effects of interteractions were explored. The study reveled that provision of long-distance bus service on the North-South Freeway between Taipei and Kaohsiung affected the between fail and bus services. The influence of relative price, differential journey time, and relative frequencies of different modes and services on various passenger series for each direction on the Taipei -Kaohsiung route were established. Recommendations were made to resolve the issue of mode competition in order to reach balanced development of bus rail transport on this corridor in Taiwan.
