AbstractSome Previous surveys found that Public Facilities in Bandung city are unsatisfactory, especially t he Shopping Facilities. This study is an attempt to obtain the actual shopping behavior pattern of people in Bandung and the peoples evaluation of the shopping facilities they patronize, in order to get some basic concepts which are necessary f or planning the appropriate improvements for those shopping facilities. The social psychological approach was applied to construct t he questionnaires which were given to 300 housewives in several areas in Bandung city, from September to October 1981. The coefficient of contingency was applied to analyze the shopping behavior pattern, and Principle Component Analysis was applied to evaluate the markets and shops that respondents patronize . The results show that in most of the cases, 'mother' is the one who is responsible for shopping especially for basic and daily food. Distance and convenience are the important considerations they take into account in selecting where to buy basic and daily food; they walk or even wait at home for an itinerant vendor for these necessities. Por clothing and shoes' shopping , price is the main t actor they consider, besides recreation and other factors. Moreover, the family life cycle, education and occupation as well as income level differentiate the considerations that people take into account in selecting where to go for shopping. Further, four basic components are obtained from the Principle Component Analysis, namely "Centrality versus Locality", "Popularity", "Substantial versus Nominal" and "Price". Based on these components each market can be evaluate quantitatively and with some other qualitative information about each market, a specific recommendation can be made for each market. Some illustrations are given in this study. A similar method is applied to the 20 shops evaluated in this study.
