AbstractThe objectives of this study were to evaluate the socio-economic changes after relocation at the Simomulyo resettlement project in Surabaya, and to investigate the extent of success of this project. The case study taken was from the relocation oi people whose dwellings encroached on the canal banks and were forced to move because of the city's canal improvement project. In providing housing tor these people, the government for the first time introduced a sites and services project in Surabaya , which was s till considered as a new project even in Indonesia. This study deals with the socio-economic aspects by finding out the changes in income , occupation, and the community life ; the attitude and opinion of the people regarding the resettlement project; and the expansion of the core houses by the households . In this sites and services projects, the government only provided serviced plots and constructed core houses, where the dwellers could make improvement and expansion on their own. The government's scheme of resettlement through this newly introduced sites and services project is probably one of the nest forms of housing for the low-income people. The area is now developing very rapidly because of its advantageous location which is close to the city center. The improvements that had taken place were mainly accomplishes through the active participation from the households. By analyzing the data from t he aspirations and opinions of the relocate , some guidelines are made, and recommendations regarding the physical aspects are also furnished for making improved plans in case of replications in the future.
