AbstractThis study attempts to identify the existing problems of water use and water management among farmers served by the Rual Lam Chamuak irrigation scheme in Nakorn Ratchasima Province in Northeast Thailand. Special attention is paid to farmers' perception of the existing problems of water use and water management and farmers' view of possible ways of overcoming these problems. The study is based on the results of a survey of 85 farmers who operated their land within the existing area of the scheme. The most serious problems identified concerned the poor state of the infrastructure of the scheme, poor communication between farmers and the officers of the Royal Irrigation Department (RID), and the farmers' lack of knowledge on water use and water management for irrigated agriculture. This last problem also reflected the failure of the Water Users' Association (WUA) to operate effectively. Access to irrigation water was found to vary widely among the farmers surveyed. Significantly, it was found that farmers who had greatest access to irrigation water and who tried to make the greatest use of the water available, were the ones who perceived most problems.
