Abstract | This study investigates the factors determining people's participation in rural Development through the Sarvodaya Shramadana Socities when compared to Rural Development Societies. The survey was conducted in three agricultural villages in the Hambantota Di strict, Sri Lanka. In collecting data, special emphasis was given to members participation in projects undertaken by each respective organizations . By analyzing the behavioral patterns of the participants , an attempt was made to investigate the factors affecting the success or failure of the Sarvodaya Shramadana Society. ln the two types of societies , differences were observed regarding the socio-economic characteristics of the members , mode of their participation and stages of this participation. Factors effecting success or failure are effectiveness of leadership, possible linkages with other organizations , socio-economic conditions of the members and tendencies and constraint s in project participation. recommendations based on such findings were attempted in promoting people's participation through the Sarvodaya Shcarnadana Societies. |
