AbstractA treatment of zero-energy hourglass mode which arises due to the one-point shear integration in lower order quadrilateral elements has been presented. The basis of the present method is to add an extra "twisting energy" actually associated with the hourglass mode to compensate for its absence due to the under-integration of the transverse shear energy in thick plate applications. In spite of its simplicity, the method is capable of overcoming all difficulties due to this spurious hourglass mode. At the same time this additional energy term does not significantly affect the general behaviour and accuracy of the original plate element. This procedure is also shown to work effectively in suppressing the spurious hourglass mode in nonlinear plate analysis.
