AbstractThis investigation deals with the behaviour of prestressed concrete beams under repeated impact loading of increasing intensity. A total of eleven beams were cast, nine of which were tested dynamically and two statically upto failure, The impact load used in the investigation consisted of a 0.981 kN hammer dropping freely onto the midspan of the beam. To increase the severity, the drop height was successively raised. At every drop, the dynamic response was recorded and measured. The measured deflect ions are compared with those obtained from known impact formulae. It is found that these formulae are unsatisfactory. An analytical procedure is proposed which takes into consideration the effect of increasing severity at each step of loading. The new procedure gives very close predictions of deflections upto a certain drop of height, beyond which the predictions are generally conservative.
