AbstractThis study presents a solution scheme for the load transfer problems of an elastic cylindrical bar partially embedded in an elastic half-space. Cases of axial load transfer and bending are analyzed. The system is considered as decomposed into two sub systems; namely an extended half-space and a fictitious bar with the modulus of elasticity equal to the difference between those of the real bar and the elastic half-space. The problem is formulated using a new compatibility condition instead of those used in this class of problems previously; i.e., the derivative of the major displacement of the fictitious bar with respect to the axial coordinate, is made equal to that on the circumference of the corresponding cross section in the extended half-space; whereas in the previous studies the cross sectional average compatibility condition is used; i.e., the derivative of the major displacement of the fictitious bar with respect to the axial coordinate, is made equal to the area average of that of the corresponding cross section in the extended half-space, The governing equation is found to be in the form of a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind and is solved by an appropriate numerical scheme. The results are compared with previous solutions.
