AbstractA finite element formulation is presented for the nonlinear analysis of cable structures. in the total La 'ra ian mode of description. A -node linear and a 3-node curved element are directly degenerated from the three dimensional field equations considering only the axial deformation effect. The cable equations of ·motion are discretized by the Galerkin weighted residual method to result in a system of nonlinear algebraic equations which are solved by the Newton-Raphson iteration technique. Results from several numerical examples show a good and consistent performance of the 3-node element for a simple cable system under the influence of its own dead weight; the 2-node element is found to be sufficient however for modelling most cable net systems. Finally, due to its lower computational cost the 2-node cable element together with an existing nonlinear shell element are used in the idealization of a ferro-cement prestressed cable-suspended roof covering an area of 30.00 x 21 . 00 m2 for a gymnasium. Rigorous analyses of this roof structure are conducted for different stages of the construction and complete solutions are presented.
