AbstractThis study applied three optimization techniques in deriving the optimum operating policies, and the optimum parameters of a reservoir system that could offer best benefit while meeting t he sectoral requirements imposed by power production, flood control, and irrigation development. Four phases of analysis were considered in the study, namely (i) the evaluation of various data generation models aimed at selecting the model that could provide input information for a deterministic study; (ii) the optimization of firm energy production by the DDDP methodology; (iii) the derivation of t he optimum system parameters (i.e. reservoir capacity, and power plant size) by simulation; and (iv) the evaluation of the system performance by the DP technique through the application of a number of flow sequences. The model developed was applied t o the Se Bang Fai basin as a case study, for which only 19 years of streamflow data were available . Results indicated t hat provision of reservoir system could beneficially produced hydropower .to the area, and could economically utilized the water resources for the development of irrigation system while solving t he frequent flooding condition in the plain. Based from the performance obtained in the study, the application of the model can be adapted to other systems with similar objectives.
