AbstractIn this study, two approaches were used to investigate the wave-induced oscillations within a bay. Firstly, the spectral analysis methods respectively based on stationary stochastic process and non-stationary stochastic process were used to examine the observed wave data. Through these examinations, it is found t hat the predominant oscillations of, the former part of the observed waves are more dominated by the incident waves themselves, while those of the later part are obviously governed by t he local topography. Secondly, t he theoretical investigation based on the principles of hydro dynamics was performed on the resonant oscillations within a bay. A finite element numerical model was developed in this investigation, and applied to analyze the oscillations of natural modes in a real bay. In this analysis, a discrete set of natural periods of the bay was directly computed. The oscillations of natural modes so computed show good agreements with those estimated by the spectral analysis method.
