Abstract | A generalized characteristic equation is derived to study the run-up and back-wash of long period waves running up into a non-prismatic bay Back-wash velocity is considered as a characteristic in the present model. The integration of the equations of the nonlinear shallow water theory is performed by the method of characteristics. In this study, it is shown that the final run-up height depends on the mass of water body piled up just before the shoreline. |
