AbstractThe effects of bed permeability on channel flow over a gravel bed are investigated theoretically and experimentally. The scope of analysis includes both the flows above and through the bed. An analytical method is developed to predict the underflow by making measurements above the bed. Two sets of experiments were performed in a slope adjustable flume: one with a 5. 5 cm thick bed of uniform gravel and the other with an equivalent impermeable bed of the same gravel. Measurements were carried out with six different slopes and by varying discharges and flow depths. Measurements of mean velocities indicate that logarithmic velocity distribution can be preserved if the reference datum is located a small distance bel ow the bed surface. The observed value of 0. 28 for the Karman constant is significantly below the commonly accepted value of 0.4 for impervious boundaries. The experimental results show that the boundary resistance of the permeable bed is higher than that of impermeable bed having identical rugosity. It is also observed, from the limited experimental results, that the friction factor increases continuously with Reynolds number. Although the measured bed flows show considerable deviations from the analytical predictions for the present experiments, the proposed method can be usefully applied in practical problems
