Abstract | An experiment is carried out in a semi- field condition at the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok to study the possibility of reducing water losses from reservoirs and storages by evaporation with the application of solidified cetyl/stearyl alcohols blended with suitable dispersants which help them form a strong, pressure resistant and self-healing monomolecular film barrier. An attempt is made to predict the best compound for conditions in Thailand. The U.S.W.B. Class A pans are the habitats of water on which the chemical retardants are applied. The experiment is conducted in three phases lasting over nine months so as to verify the ability of the compounds as retardants. The effects of other meteorological parameters such as, wind and temperature of t he water surface in the pan, which influence the reduction capability of the monolayer are also studied. The results of this study indicate that a reduction in evaporation is possible; some improvements in the chemical s are necessary along with improved methods of application and maintenance of the monomolecular film layer on the surface of the water body. Though the reductions obtained in this study are low, it nevertheless proves that monomolecular layers have a good potentiality of being feasible water conservation tools. |
