Abstract | Mekong delta is an area of great importance regarding its agricultural development potential. Every year, during the flood, t he Mekong inundates most of t his area which is heavily populated. The streamflow Synthesis and Reservoir Regulation (SSARR) model was employed for t he purpose of flood forecasting of the Mekong delta under effect s of overbank flow, tidal conditions , and direct rainfall. The calibration of t he model was done using the 1982 flood data from 20th September to 15th October while the verification was done using the 1982 flood data from 1st to 30th of September as well as 1971 flood data from 1st to 15th of August. Sensitivity analyses were performed for t he important model parameters, which are the inflow division relationship and the exchange flow relationship between t he Mekong and Bassac rivers, and the overbank flow relationships between stations along the Mekong , Bassac, and Vaico rivers. Calibration and verification results, after confirmed by statistical measures, revealed that the SSARR model can be applied successfully for the flood forecasting of daily maximum water levels of t he Mekong and Bassac rivers, while the parameter relationships of the stations of the Vaico river need some more refinement. However, it was remarked t hat more attempts have to be made to collect more discharge, water level , and tidal data to enable the model to simul ate water level fluctuations especially at stations under strong tidal influence. |
